Algarve Attractions
The Algarve is a great location for a holiday with a warm climate and beautiful, clear beaches. However, away from the beaches there is also plenty to keep the whole family entertained from modern attractions to more traditional Portuguese markets.
The Algarve is home to the annual Algarve International Film festival in the location of Portimao. This popular event hosts an excellent short film competition, which sees competitive entries from great directors from around the world. The festival, or `Festival Internacional de Cine do Algarve` has screenings shown across the Algarve region.
A major event in the Portuguese calendar is the Mardi Gras Carnival each February. In the Algarve, the town of Loule is the centre point of the fiestas, although parties will be happening in every town in the country. Large crowds flock to the area to see the beautifully decorated floats, samba dancers and celebration flowing through the region.
A great day trip when you are holidaying in the Algarve is an excursion to explore more of Portugal and beyond. From the Algarve you can find excursions to a number of places including the wine routes of Seville and Evora as well as shopping trips to Portimao, Lisbon, Tangiers and Gibraltar. There are also day trips to discover the Historical Algarve that you don`t normally see. You`re your base in the Algarve there are a number of great locations to visit to make the most of your holiday time.
If you are looking for an adrenaline rush while on holiday, the Algarve will not disapoint. At Amancil there is a 760m go-kart track, which has been designed as a replica of the Brazilian circuit of Jacarepagua.
Guia, which is close to Albufeira, has a great water park called Zoomarine. Here you can experience dolphins, sea lions and seals up close while they put on an entertaining show. There are also rides for the children and a swimming pool to enjoy, plus a huge aquarium where you can marvel at all the tropical fish and learn about all the creatures under the sea.
A particularly good place to visit in the Algarve is Quarteira, in the central Algarve region. This historic town has been transformed from a small village into a much-loved holiday destination, without taking away any of its quaint Portuguese charm. Being a fishing village, there are plenty of local seafood specialities that are not to be missed.
Many of the holidaymakers that come to Quarteira return every year to enjoy its long, open beach and beautiful promenade. The waters are known to be very safe because it has been calmed, which makes it an ideal place to take young children. Close by, you`ll also find the `Fonte Santa` with a hot spring, which is rumoured to have natural healing properties and is well worth a visit.
There are lots of excellent hotels in the Algarve and in the Quarteira area. Many of the Quarteira hotels have beachfront locations and have plenty of family-friendly facilities. This peaceful location is the perfect base to explore all that the Algarve has to offer. |
