Travellers to Malta can choose to explore the thousands of years of history or just kick back and enjoy all the trappings of contemporary life. The World Heritage listed walled city of Valletta is a masterpiece of the baroque era, as well as Malta's capital and home to some e of Europe's finest art works, churches and palaces. Street events, theatre and music, and fiestas are year-round attractions. Side streets with tiny shops selling books, antiques, jewellery and fashion items are all within easy walking around Valletta, where you'll come across votive statues, fountains and architectural gems. And when you need to rest and revive, the city's squares, courtyards, gardens and numerous cafes are all on offer.

Away from the capital Valletta, the Islands' villages are typically Mediterranean, with fiestas and archaeological or architectural treasures. The seaside villages have a thriving fishing industry while inland villages are ruled by the harvest cycles.
